Thanks to Switchio\u2019s<\/a><\/strong><\/span> technology and a partnership with TOMRA<\/strong>, that\u2019s now a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Role: The Technology That Makes It Work<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Behind the seamless process is Switchio<\/strong>. Our platform provides the complete infrastructure for payments and refunds \u2013 from activating the deposit at the point of purchase to automatically returning it when the cup is handed back. A secure digital token links the returned cup with the original transaction, ensuring that the refund reaches the customer\u2019s bank account within seconds.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Pilot in Denmark, Rollout in Lisbon<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The first live deployment began in early 2024 in Aarhus, Denmark<\/strong>, where the system was piloted on a smaller city scale. Over 18 months, more than one million cups were returned, with a return rate exceeding 85 percent.<\/strong> The results confirmed the system works \u2013 and laid the foundation for further rollout.<\/span><\/p>\n

Building on that success, Lisbon became the first European capital<\/strong> to implement a city-wide reusable cup system in June 2025. The first return points were installed at kiosks in Pra\u00e7a de S\u00e3o Paulo and Pra\u00e7a do Pr\u00edncipe Real, with full expansion across the city planned for October.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A City Setting the Example<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lisbon<\/strong> backed the initiative with a municipal regulation banning single-use cups. To support the policy, TOMRA deployed its Rotake system to manage the full lifecycle of the cups \u2013 from tracking and collection to cleaning and reuse. The local hospitality association AHRESP<\/strong> also joined the effort, helping caf\u00e9s, bars, and restaurants transition to a circular model.<\/span><\/p>\n
